Cover Reveal & Author Interview — Second Star, by J. M. Sullivan

Book reviews

Today I’m interviewing my amazing friend J. M. Sullivan, author of The Wanderland Chronicles Series, which is an Alice in Wonderland retelling (you can read my review of book one here). I also have a special surprise for you– I’m helping her reveal the cover to her upcoming book, Second Star (The Neverland Transmissions) which is a Peter Pan retelling! Scroll down to get a look at it! 😉

1) Confess three secrets about yourself:

  • I have 3 tattoos. All of them are of cherry blossoms.
  • My two favorite smells are coconut and vanilla.
  • When I was little I shattered my knee in an accident and had to have it reconstructed.

2) Have you always wanted to be a writer? What got you into it?

Writing has always been a dream of mine. When I was little I loved reading and eventually that turned into a love for telling and writing my own stories. The interest grew into a passion, and after Alice: The Wanderland Chronicles was finished and published, I was hooked. I knew that being an author was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

3) For those who haven’t read it, tell us about Alice: The Wanderland Chronicles.

Alice is a dark and twisty retelling of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland with an undead twist. The Momerath Plague has struck the world and when’s Alice’s sister, Dinah contracts the un-deadly virus, Alice ventures into Wanderland to follow a cure and is thrust into a world where momerath aren’t the only danger waiting.

4) How do you have your coffee? (Iced, black, with syrups?)

It’s not a cup of coffee unless it’s got a splash of creamer, preferably flavored. My absolute favorite is Peppermint Mocha, but Caramel or Vanilla will also work in a pinch.

5) What’s something we can look forward to in The Neverland Transmissions: Second Star?

So much! I am so excited to share The Neverland Transmissions with you for so many different reasons. Second Star follows Captain Wendy Darling as she takes her crew interstellar to find the long-lost planet of Neverland to save her childhood hero, Captain James Hooke. If you love retellings, sci fi, or space operas, it’s one you won’t want to miss!

6) What’s one book that you’d highly recommend everybody read?

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. It is my favorite book of all time and a large part of the reason I am so enamored by retellings. It is absolutely magical, but if fantasy isn’t your thing, I would suggest you try the sci-fi series the Illuminae Files by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. Actually, you know what, just read them all. You won’t be disappointed.

7) Out of all of your books, who is your favourite character to write?

I don’t think I have one favorite character to write, but so far I would say that I have a soft spot for my sidekicks. In Alice, I loved writing all of the scenes where Chess made and appearance, and in Second Star, Johns was always a blast. It must have something to do with the swaggy, bravado that both of them have and their punchy one-liners. Whatever it is, those scenes always stuck out to me, and I hope that they do for my readers, too.

8) Where would you like to see #AuthorConfession go in the future?

Oh gosh I don’t know! It’s already exceeded so many expectations, it’s hard to believe! I guess right now the focus is just one growing what we already have. Our Twitter group is absolutely amazing and I am so thankful for our following! Our newest project–the podcast is still picking up so I guess that is really our next focus- so, if you’re looking for a new podcast to read, maybe check ours out! 😉

9) Finally, give us a hint about the Alice sequel.

Oooooh I like hints! Well, Alice’s sequel is coming soon and it’s one you won’t want to miss! Alice is back in Wanderland, but in a new camp with secrets of its own. Readers can expect to meet old favorite characters as well as being introduced to some new major players in Wanderland’s chess board culminating in the ultimate standoff against two powerful queens.
